Meet Ruth from Flourish Academy

With over 20 years in the social work and community sector, Now I’m showing my age! And the past 8 years building Flourish Community Solutions alongside families and communities, one thing has continued to sit at the heart of everything we do, people do genuinely flourish when they feel safe, understood, and connected.

Over the years, I worked alongside so many parents who were doing their absolute best while carrying exhaustion, stress, worry, and at times, a deep sense of isolation. Many were navigating challenging behaviours, emotional outbursts, anxiety, school struggles, trauma, family stress, or simply the overwhelming pressure of trying to “get parenting right.”

What I saw time and time again was not a lack of love or care.

Parents loved their children deeply.

What they often lacked was support, understanding, practical tools, and reassurance that they were not failing.

At the same time, I saw educators, carers, and support workers trying to support children with increasingly complex emotional needs while also juggling the pressures of their own lives and wellbeing. Everyone was trying to hold so much.

It became clear that many families and professionals didn’t need more judgement or unrealistic expectations. They needed compassionate support, practical education, connection, and hope.

That understanding is what led to the creation of Flourish Academy.

Flourish Academy was created as a gentle, supportive space where families, children, educators, and care teams could access trauma-informed education and wellbeing programs that feel practical, relatable, and deeply human. A space where people can learn without shame, ask questions openly, and feel empowered rather than overwhelmed.

At the centre of our work is a strong passion for parenting education and personal wellbeing. Parenting can be one of the most rewarding experiences in life, but it can also be incredibly emotional, exhausting, and at times lonely. There is no perfect manual for raising children, especially when children are experiencing anxiety, emotional dysregulation, behavioural challenges, sensory needs, or the impacts of stress and trauma.

Through our parenting workshops and programs, we help parents better understand what may be happening underneath their child’s behaviour. In my many years working in the social work sector I’ve always believed that behaviour is communication.

Children are not trying to “give us a hard time” often they are having a hard time. Big emotions, overwhelm, fear, frustration, sensory overload, and unmet emotional needs can all show up through behaviour. When parents begin to understand the nervous system, emotional regulation, attachment, and the deeper needs beneath behaviours, something beautiful often happens, compassion grows, connection strengthens, and homes begin to feel calmer and safer for everyone. And parents can start to enjoy their child again.

Our parenting programs are designed to feel warm, supportive, and realistic. They are not about perfection or adding more pressure onto already overwhelmed parents. Instead, they focus on connection, co-regulation, emotional safety, communication, resilience, and practical tools that can be gently incorporated into everyday family life.

Many parents tell us they leave feeling lighter, not because parenting suddenly becomes easy, but because they finally feel understood and supported rather than judged.

We also recognise something that is so important but often forgotten,  parents need care too.

Parents need spaces where they can breathe, reflect, regulate, and reconnect with themselves. Through self-awareness practices, supportive conversations, therapeutic approaches, and community connection, we aim to support the wellbeing of the entire family, not just the child.

Alongside parenting programs, Flourish Academy also works with schools, educators, care providers, and community organisations to provide trauma-informed training, mentoring and consulting. We help adults better understand emotional regulation, attachment, sensory needs, neurodiversity, and relationship-based approaches that create safer and more supportive environments for children and young people.

What matters deeply to us is that children feel emotionally safe enough to learn, grow, and be themselves.

We also know that sustainable care requires supported adults. Educators, carers, and support workers often hold enormous emotional responsibility, and many quietly experience stress, compassion fatigue, and burnout.

Our training encourages reflective practice, emotional awareness, nervous system regulation, and wellbeing strategies that support both children and the adults caring for them.

Flourish Academy also offers workshops and wellbeing programs directly for children and young people, helping them build emotional literacy, confidence, resilience, communication skills, and healthy coping strategies in ways that feel engaging, safe, and supportive.

One of the most special parts of our work is the integration of holistic and body-based approaches alongside education and therapeutic support. Over the years, I became increasingly aware that healing doesn’t only happen through words. Sometimes children and adults need opportunities to reconnect with calm, movement, creativity, play, and safety within their own bodies.

Through yoga, mindfulness, play-based learning, creative therapies, play therapy approaches, movement, and nervous system regulation practices, we create gentle spaces where people can slow down, reconnect, and feel supported emotionally, physically, and relationally.

For many families, these approaches become small but meaningful moments of calm and connection in the middle of busy and stressful lives.

At Flourish Academy, we understand that every child, family, and individual is different. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to healing, parenting, or emotional wellbeing. Our role is simply to walk alongside people with compassion, understanding, practical support, and evidence-informed strategies that help create meaningful and lasting change.

As experienced professionals, we also value working alongside incredible practitioners, therapists, and educators who bring warmth, knowledge, and heart into the Flourish Academy space.

Today, Flourish Community Solutions and Flourish Academy continue to support families, schools, organisations, and communities with a shared vision, helping people flourish emotionally, relationally, and holistically.

Because when parents feel supported, children feel safer.

When children feel safer, families and communities become stronger.
